What is Girl Meets Health?

Well, let’s see. I’m a girl, and I want to be healthy! Girl Meets Health is a healthy-living food blog that chronicles my journey of learning, exercising, and eating my way to a healthier lifestyle. But let’s get one thing straight. My definition of health is much broader than just nutrition and fitness. While those are a passion of mine, I believe that living a truly healthy lifestyle encompasses so much more. When I look back on my life, I don’t want to see someone who ate salad all day and exercised for 2 hours a day. I want to want to know that I laughed, loved, traveled, and ate ample amounts of cookies.

My mission with GMH is to show people that living a healthy lifestyle does not have to be difficult or boring. It also does not mean that you have to spend an entire life of dieting! Instead, being healthy can and should help lead to a happier and more fulfilling life…while having fun along the way.

About Gracie

I’m the girl, Gracie. I’m a twenty-something recent college graduate from Pennsylvania. My interests are pretty simple: fitness, food, friends, and fun.

My passion for health came about when I was a teenager. During high school I was diagnosed with thyroid disease (read more here). It was difficult to accept the fact that I had a health issue at such a young age, but instead of letting it pull me down, I learned everything I could to improve my health. I paired my new-found knowledge about health with my love for good food, and over the years I’ve experimented my way towards creating healthy and delicious eats.

Other interests of mine include writing, reading, social media, fashion, politics, animals, and music. But most importantly is my faith in Jesus Christ, which, is paramount to everything else.

You can read or ask for more information about me on the Q&A page.

My Health Philosophy

To me, being healthy is not just about nutrition and fitness. While those are important, they are just part of the equation. I believe that mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness are just as, if not more important to living a full and healthy lifestyle. So while this blog will chronicle my eating habits and exercise routine, I will also focus on ways to improve and cultivate those other important areas of overall wellness, such as: decreasing stress, increasing self-confidence, improving relationships, and finding ways to be a positive person in the midst of life’s difficult situations.

I believe that a healthy lifestyle should be one of life’s main priorities, and nutrition and fitness are complementary to that. I think that sometimes people place too much priority on nutrition and fitness, which causes them become a source of stress rather than wellness. That’s why I try to maintain a balanced view when it comes to my eating habits and exercise routine. These things are disciplines that can and should be practiced in an enjoyable way rather than becoming a source of stress or anxiety. Because of this, eating and exercise habits are bound to vary from person to person. And that’s okay. Life is hard enough as it is, so nutrition and fitness should make things better rather than more difficult. So I guess you could say I take a somewhat easy-going approach to nutrition and fitness.

I believe that food is fuel. I also believe that eating should be enjoyable, satisfying, and just plain fun! That’s why I strive to make and eat healthy yet delicious foods as much as I can. With that being said, you should know that I’m not a vegetarian. I don’t eat all organic foods. And you know what? Sometimes I enjoy  fast food. My point is that I am by no means a “perfect” eater…if there really is such a thing!

I would say that I follow the 80/20 plan. 80% of the time I aim to eat clean, whole foods. I try to avoid eating processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and foods with added sugar. And the other 20% of the time? Well, let’s just say that I’ve never been one to turn down pizza…or ice cream ;) What I mean is that I believe that there is definitely room for “splurging” within a healthy lifestyle, and you will certainly see that here at GMH!
